Celebrating Easter at Iecava

The officers - Karina and Liene

The officers – Karina and Liene

Easter Sunday saw me travelling south of Riga to the town of Iecava.  There are two young women officers who lead the work of The Salvation Army in this town, both of whom speak excellent English.  This meant that I was allowed out on my own without an interpreter and ‘the girls’ were able to translate for me.  In conversation after the meeting it was interesting to learn that, although they are both Latvian and native Latvian speakers, they converse with each other in English, and even think in English!I arrived in time for Easter breakfast, and it was great to be with God’s family – people of all ages – celebrating the resurrection.I was introduced to a new Latvian tradition for Easter which involves bashing your decorated hard-boiled egg against someone elses!  The owner of the egg that survives the ordeal is the winner.  A lady called Dzinta emerged as the winner. We sang together, prayed together, the children sang for us, and we shared the timeless stories surrounding the resurrection of Jesus.
